5 Ways columbus homeowners can prepare their roofs this fall

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Columbus, Ohio, and as the temperature drops, you should get serious about preparing your home for the fall and winter months.

A major part of preparing for wintry weather is hiring a trusted roofer to inspect and perform any roof maintenance. The National Roofing Contractors Association recommends that you have your roof professionally inspected in the spring and fall every year to stay on top of any maintenance and repairs.

Here are five things you should do to prepare your roof for fall:

1. Clean and replace any damaged gutters

Leaves and debris can collect in your gutters during the fall months, causing clogs that can lead to potentially costly repairs. If gutters get neglected for too long, they may collapse and prevent water from draining off your roof. Keep an eye on the gutters through the fall and have them cleaned as needed before temperatures get too cold.

2. Clear off the debris from your roof

During the gutter cleaning process, have any leaves and debris cleared from your roof before they reach the gutters or begin to rot. Debris often collects in roof valleys, which can lead to roof leaks and other damage.

3. Check the roof for damage

Fall is also a great time to have a trusted roofer check for any signs of damage one more time before winter. They can look around for curling or missing shingles. Roofers will also check for any damaged flashing around vents, chimneys, or skylights and get a jump on any repairs before winter hits. It is best to catch these problems before winter hits, and it becomes harder to locate and repair roof leaks.

4. Optimize the water drainage system

Clean gutters help keep water from collecting on your roof, but you will need an effective drainage system to carry the water away from your home. Be sure to have downspouts checked for clogs and that they point away from the home foundation, walkways, and driveways. You can also add extensions to downspouts to direct water further from those areas.

5. Improve attic insulation and ventilation

To keep your energy costs manageable, consider upgrading the ventilation systems in your attic. Vents along your roof can help keep cool air flowing and prevent condensation and mold from forming. Trapped heat in your attic can also lead to ice dams and cause roof leaks.

Poor attic ventilation can also lead to higher energy costs during the summer as your air conditioner works harder to cool your home. Consult an experienced roofer or contractor with any questions about your attic ventilation options.
